Celebrating the Life of Carolyn Janice Taylor James: A Legacy of Love, Laughter, and Learning
Jan Taylor James was born January 18, 1935 in Hanceville AL. She was the youngest of eight children and the apple of her Father’s eye. Papa Taylor provided for their family as a railroad carpenter, doing odd jobs in the community and occasional pastoral duties. She graduated from Hanceville High School, entered St. Bernard College in Cullman to pursue a degree in education. During this time, she began teaching several grades in a one room schoolhouse. Upon completion of her bachelor’s degree in 1962, she began teaching Fifth grade at Crestline Elementary. She continued her education, obtaining her Master’s Degree in Education at Peabody College in Nashville in 1966. In 1970, she began teaching Ninth grade at Morgan County High school where spent most of her career, developing treasured friendships. Teaching was her passion. She poured her heart into mentoring students from every walk of life and if they wanted to learn, she made sure they had the opportunity to achieve their goals.
In 1954 on Christmas Eve, she married Hollis Fred James at the First Baptist Church in Hanceville. With a marriage spanning 69 years, being the wife of a high school band director called for night, weekend and summer obligations. She never missed a band performance and supported her husband’s program however needed.
As a devoted mother and grandmother, Jan retired in 1989, turning her energies toward spending time with her daughter’s family including 3 grandchildren whom she adored.
Jan was an avid reader preferring historical biographies, inspirational books and lighter fare. She had a deep love for animals, enjoyed cooking, fishing, gardening, playing cards, cross-stitching, Broadway musicals and traveling. Jan cherished her family and friends deeply, consistently radiating warmth and light to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
