Wednesday’s will be picked up Thursday, Dec. 26.
Thursday’s will be picked up Friday, Dec. 27.
Friday’s will be picked up Saturday, Dec. 28.
No change in garbage pickup for New Year’s.
Tuesday, Dec. 17 – Shop with a Firefighter at Walmart in Athens. Firefighters, their families, Steelcase and city employees will help kids shop for Christmas. These are students submitted to AFR through school counselors. Last year, 62 kids were able to shoe ($200 each). They can spend half on toys/fun stuff and half on clothes and other necessities. They learn about budgeting through this process, and many ask to pick something out for a loved one. I have asked Walmart for permission. Waiting for final approval, but not expecting any issues. PLEASE let me know if you are coming to cover this. PLEASE do not use any child’s name or image without the parent/guardian’s consent.
Thursday, Dec. 19 – Lincoln-Bridgeforth Park Committee’s annual bike/toy give-away at the park. 815 Westview Avenue. This is for families who need some help from Santa. Each child will receive a toy and there will be a drawing for bikes. Santa will arrive by fire truck. Police officers, firefighters, Mayor’s Office, Mayor’s Youth Commissioners will assist the committee. The park will also have its tree lighting. Athens High Band, City of Athens, Athens Arts League, city employees, DHR and others have supported this project.
Wednesday, Dec. 25 – Athens Police officers will become elves in blue and will randomly distribute Christmas gifts on Christmas morning to kids they see as they patrol. They usually go to the apartment complexes, hospital, and other areas. One year, a couple of brothers ran out to meet them and said, “Santa didn’t forget us.” The gifts from APD were all they got. When they have time, the officers will play with the kids (throw footballs, etc.).
