With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Alma Kingsbury, a loving wife, a devoted mother, and a faithful servant of God. She left this world on May 11, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family, leaving behind a legacy of loving kindness, strength, and unwavering faith.
Alma was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, James “Jim” Elwood Kingsbury, who loved her dearly. She leaves behind her two sons and one daughter, David Kingsbury (Meg), Daniel Kingsbury (Jessica), and Susan Meadows (Rainer); grandchildren, Kyle Powers, Christine Turk (Greg), Mary Kate Schonhoff (Matt), Maggie Cooper (Jamie), Jennifer Schwenk (Bill), Price Meadows (Megan), and Caroline Kingsbury; and great-grandchildren, Mary Grace and Eli Schonhoff, Nolan Turk, Eli (Christyne), J. Vincent, and Susan Schwenk, Mary Evans, Whit, and Hazel Cooper, and Myles and Olivia Meadows.
First and foremost, Alma loved the Lord. Early on, she was deeply involved with First United Methodist Church of Huntsville, teaching Sunday School and leading Bible study and prayer groups. In the 1970s, she felt the call of God to become a pastor. She completed the requirements for ministry and was ordained a pastor in the Methodist Church. She then served as a pastor for over 20 years in various Methodist Churches.
Alma Kingsbury was an accomplished woman of many talents and achievements. In her younger years, she was deeply involved with the Huntsville Garden Club and earned many ribbons for her creative designs. She later became a certified Master Gardener and enjoyed planting vegetables and maintaining beautiful flower gardens around the family home.
Alma was a talented artist with the paint brush. She mastered oil painting, collages, and excelled at her favorite: watercolor. Many of her paintings were on display and sold at her booth in the Lowe Mill Huntsville Art Gallery. She was a talented pianist and often made the keys of her baby grand piano ring out with classical music or her favorite hymns. Alma also employed her keen eye to interior decorating. She was a great success with her projects in that area.
In the 1980s, Alma pursued a degree in English Literature at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. She maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and always loved learning.
Alma’s interest in rare treasures led her to open an antique business for several years. Along the way, she collected a vast array of unique pieces, with which she decorated her home. A fan of US History, Alma researched her lineage to find she had a relative who fought in the American Revolutionary War. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), serving as chaplain of her chapter.
A little-known fact about Alma is that she liked sports cars. On nice days she could often be spotted driving a bright red Pontiac Firebird in the neighborhood. And she dearly loved her precious cats and dogs as well as all animals, birds and her favorite blue butterflies. She kept her yard full of bird feeders and flowers!
Alma now rests with the LORD Jesus and her loving family in unimaginable paradise. We who are still here and grieving are comforted by that knowledge.
A visitation and memorial service will be held at First Christian Church of Huntsville on Wednesday, June 11. Visitation will be from 12-12:30 p.m. with the service to follow. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, please donate to the Greater Huntsville Humane Society or First Christian Church.
