MONTGOMERY-The names “chicken snake” or simply “rat snake” are fitting titles for one of Alabama’s more common large snakes, the gray rat snake (Pantherophis spiloides). Rat snakes are proficient predators of rodents but at times are unwelcomed visitors to chicken coops consuming eggs or fowl.
“Oak snake” is another colloquial name for the rat snake and is believed to refer to the color of the snake. The name could also refer to its habit climbing the rough barked tree. Given any rough surface, a rat snake can easily climb up a tree where it searches for bird nests and their contents. At times, homeowners are alarmed to see a large snake making its way up the sides of their brick houses as the snake uses its belly scales to grip and inch up walls.
Rat snakes can grow quite large attaining lengths over six feet. Nonvenomous and harmless, the rat snake is good to have around as they help control rodent populations that could otherwise infest our homes. While it is difficult to snake-proof your property, eliminating hiding places including woodpiles and shrubbery close to your home is a good first step. Commercial snake repellents are ineffective and may be of more psychological benefit to the homeowner.
