AMA.M. Brewer Jr. died peacefully at the home of his loving daughters, Thursday, April 2, 2015, following a brief illness. He was 74 years old. Born April 3, 1940, in Florence, Alabama, A.M. was the only beloved child of his adoring mother, Reba White Brewer and father, Alfred Marvin Brewer Sr. He graduated from Coffee High School in 1958 and immediately joined the United States Marine Corps where he served from 1958 until 1962. A.M. spent his military service with the Second Battalion Platoon 291 at Paris Island, South Carolina before shipping out to Okanawa, Japan and later Vietnam. Upon returning from his tour in Vietnam, A.M. used the G.I. bill to attend the University of North Alabama majoring in business and marketing while working midnights at Ford Motor Company. He became the first person in his family to receive a college degree. Upon graduation from college, A.M. worked at Ford Motor Company, Reynolds Metals, and for years in pharmaceutical sales. Later in his life, he became the owner of several cemeteries and funeral homes in the Guntersville area.
While at UNA, A.M. met and married Ann. Together they raised their two daughters, Amy and Emily. A.M. was known all around for being a convincing businessman; a risk-taker, avid local golfer, hilarious storyteller, loyal friend, and never one to shy away from being the center of attention and could play any instrument he picked up by ear. He loved sports and for many years traveled to the SEC basketball tournaments throughout the southeast. He also made quite a name for himself on the local golf courses in Florence. He prided himself on being a good provider for his family and for taking care of his mother, whom he adored. Each year A.M. took great joy in taking his family, including his mother, on wonderful summer vacations. His only wish was for his family to have a wonderful time and the best life. He was always willing to help anyone. A.M. also had a great love for animals and had an extremely tender heart for dogs. In his last days, he enjoyed being around the family pets of his daughters. He was a wonderful, loving son who took care of his mother until her dying breath and is now joyfully reunited with her once again.
A.M. was preceded in death by his mother, Reba White Brewer, father, Alfred Marvin Brewer Sr., and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He is survived by his daughters, Amy Brewer Mayfield and husband, Steve, and Emily Brewer Mayfield; his former wife of 30 years and the mother of his children, Ann Brewer Webb; grandchildren, Garrett Mayfield, Brooks Mayfield, Mollie Mayfield; and lifelong and special friends of the family, Larry and Joann Moore.
His daughters were honored to lovingly attend to his every need during his illness and bring him home to care for him in his last weeks on earth. Amy and Emily count it as their greatest privilege to have been given the blessing of being able to care for and honor their daddy in this way.
Visitation will be today, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Spry-Williams Funeral Home, Florence. The service will follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Brother Tim Grigsby officiating. Interment will be at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Steve Mayfield, Brad Mayfield, Garrett Mayfield, Brooks Mayfield, and Davis Sandlin. Honorary pallbearer will be Larry Moore.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to nurses Courtney Abston, Leigh Moody, and Teresa Poole and the entire staff of Amedysis Hospice Care.
