Peter Paul Shinkunas Jr., 72, of Athens, Alabama, passed away on April 8, 2026.
Pete was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend who valued family above all else. Known for his humor, wit, and occasional shenanigans, he leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with those who knew him.
He is survived by his sons, Pete Shinkunas III (Karla) and Matt Shinkunas (Ashley), both of Athens. He was a proud “Pappy” to Ben Shinkunas, Grayson Shinkunas, Jeb Shinkunas, Shaviny Shinkunas, and Max Shinkunas, who brought him great joy and delight.
Pete also shared a special bond with his dedicated friend, Debbie Prince, whose companionship and support he deeply valued.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter Shinkunas Sr. and Violet Shinkunas, and his older brother, Bill Shinkunas. He is also survived by his sisters, Violet Shinkunas Gerald of Terry, Mississippi, and Barbara Shinkunas Zehren of Birmingham, Alabama.
He loved dogs, holidays, music, firearms, vacationing at the beach, telling jokes and stories, and making people laugh.
Pete experienced the full spectrum of life—love and loss, joy and grief, achievement and adversity, and seasons of abundance and times of hardship. From these experiences came wisdom and deep insight, which he shared generously with his sons, grandchildren, and others in his circle.
He gave his heart, his name, and his vows twice—first to Janet Shinkunas, with whom he shared the birth and raising of their sons, and later to Lynn Carman Small, with whom he shared several years of joy and happiness. In his final months, he expressed deep appreciation and gratitude for both relationships and what each of them brought into in his life.
He finished life strong, whole and complete – marked by redemption and grace. And has entered into eternity to be with his Lord and Savior and those who have gone before him.
A memorial service will be held at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home in Athens on Saturday, April 18. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:30 a.m.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, you honor his memory through acts of kindness and love.
Peter Paul Shinkunas Jr.
