LIMESTONE COUNTY — Absentee voting is now underway for the 2026 Alabama Primary Elections, and Limestone County election officials are reminding residents that Monday, May 4 is the last day to register to vote ahead of the May 19 primary.

“Absentee voting has already begun, and we want every eligible voter in Limestone County to know their options,” said Kelly Davis, Limestone County Circuit Court Clerk. “Whether you plan to vote in person on Election Day or by absentee ballot, now is the time to make sure you’re registered and ready.”

Voters may cast absentee ballots in person at the Limestone County Circuit Court Clerk’s office on the first floor of the Limestone County Courthouse, 200 West Washington Street in Athens. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, closed from noon to 1:00 p.m. for lunch.

Who Qualifies to Vote Absentee

Alabama law allows a voter to cast an absentee ballot if he or she meets one of the following qualifications:

  • Expects to be absent from the county on Election Day
  • Is ill or has a physical disability that prevents a trip to the polling place
  • Is physically incapacitated and unable to access their assigned polling place due to a neurological, musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, or other life-altering disorder that affects the ability to perform manual tasks, stand, walk unassisted, see, hear, or speak — and is either age 65 or older, or is a voter with a disability
  • Is a registered Alabama voter living outside the county, including members of the armed forces, voters employed outside the United States, college students, or a spouse or child of such a person
  • Is an appointed election officer or poll watcher serving at a polling place other than his or her regular polling place
  • Expects to work a required shift of 10 hours or more that coincides with polling hours
  • Is a caregiver for a family member (to the second degree of kinship) who is confined to their home
  • Is currently incarcerated in prison or jail and has not been convicted of a felony involving moral turpitude

“May 4 will be here before you know it, and we don’t want anyone to miss their chance to have a voice in this election,” said Sandy Smith, Chair of the Limestone County Board of Registrars. “If you’re not registered, or if you need to update your registration, please take care of that now. Our office is ready to help.”

Voters may register at the Limestone County Board of Registrars office, Clinton Street Courthouse Annex, Second Floor, Suite E, 100 South Clinton Street, Athens, or online at https://www.sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/voter/register-to-vote.
