Gwen Watson Thomas passed away peacefully in hospice care on December 12, 2025, in Jackson, TN. Born on August 28, 1947, in Selmer, TN, Gwen’s journey through life was marked by an unwavering commitment to her family and an exemplary career dedicated to serving others.

Gwen spent over four decades with the Tennessee Department of Human Services. Her dedication to her work was not just a career but a calling, as she tirelessly worked to improve the lives of those around her. Her colleagues remember her as a pillar of strength and compassion, someone who brought warmth and understanding to every interaction.

Beyond her professional life, Gwen’s heart was truly at home. She was the matriarch of her family, offering boundless love and support. Gwen’s presence was a comfort, her advice a guiding light, and her laughter a source of joy.

 

Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, Guy Rayford Thomas; adored son, John Patterson Thomas; sister, Earline Cox; niece, Patricia Etheridge; and nephews, David Todd Cox and Chris Cox. She was preceded in death by her parents, Beulah Beatrice Ashe Watson and Dalton Watson; sisters, Vercilee Moore and Geraldine Boleyn; brothers, James Watson, Joe Watson, and John Watson; and nephews, Greg Watson, Derek Watson, Joe Boleyn, and Jimmy Watson.

A funeral to celebrate Gwen’s life will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2025, in the chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. The burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens.

In her passing, Gwen leaves behind a world that she made brighter and kinder. We take solace in knowing that her journey was full of meaning and that her influence will continue to be felt for generations to come. Gwen Watson Thomas was, and always will be, a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived.
