Avner Martin Horton, age 87, of Birmingham, Ala., passed away on June 1, 2013.
He was born and raised in Sheffield, Ala. He was a member of Sun Valley Church of Christ. He served in the Armyduring World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the city of Birmingham after 33 years and also worked for many years as a security guard at CBI.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Frances Shea Horton, his parents, George and Lena Horton, his brothers, Dan, Percy, and Mitch Horton, and sister, Bea Cottrell.
He is survived by a daughter, Sheila H. Strickland, of Birmingham; and sons, Andrew M. Horton, of Birmingham, and John N. Horton, of Warrior; grandchildren, Winford O. Strickland III (Cynthia), of Gardendale, and Daniel G. Strickland (Angie), of Gardendale; and great-grandchildren, Kaleigh, Amaryssein, Christopher and Alex, of Gardendale; brothers, Horace Horton, of Sheffield, and Bob Horton, of West Columbia, S.C.; and a sister, Dorothy Kuykendall, of Gallatin, Tenn.; also many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on June 3, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. at Jefferson Memorial in Trussville. His funeral service will be on June 4, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the chapel with Terry Partain officiating. Interment will follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, Trussville.
