Jerry Wayne Mitchell, 82, passed peacefully from this life on September 4, 2025, at Regency Skilled Nursing in Huntsville, Alabama, his loving wife by his side.
He was born on February 12, 1943, in Sheffield, Alabama to Lem and Willie Angeline Mitchell. Jerry grew up on his family’s farm near the Dismals Canyon in Franklin County, Alabama. He helped on the farm from a young age and was a member of the Phil Campbell High School basketball team. He also participated in the National Honor Society and graduated in 1961.
Following high school, Jerry attended The University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa, Alabama). During his time there, he was baptized at the University Church of Christ by minister Kenneth Reed. He remained a faithful, consecrated Christian throughout his life.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in math, with a minor in economics, graduating from UA in 1966. He began his career teaching high school mathematics at Winfield City Schools and met his future wife, Alma Frances Lindsey during this time.
The couple were married in 1967 by preacher Gus Nichols in Jasper, Alabama. They later moved to Jachin, Alabama where they purchased the Lindsey’s family store, Jachin Grocery. In addition to running the store, they raised beef cattle on their Jachin farm.
Jerry enjoyed rural farm life. He raised prize-winning Tennessee Walking horses as well as Quarter horses. He enjoyed horseback riding and camping with his family, and he could play several instruments (the five-string banjo, guitar, and organ) entirely by ear. After raising their children, he and Alma traveled by RV to Canada and all of the United States, except Hawaii.
He taught Sunday School and occasionally filled in for the preacher. He led song services at Churches of Christ in Winfield, Butler, and Athens, Alabama as well as in Meridian, Mississippi. Jerry and Alma hosted many well-known ministers in their home, including Guy N. Woods, V. P. Black, Cecil May, Jr., and Gilbert Kretzer.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Alma Frances Lindsey Mitchell; their children, Stephanie Lynn Robertson (James) and David Lindsey Mitchell (Nicole); a cherished granddaughter, Elizabeth Lindsey Robertson; a dear sister, Frances Mitchell Johnson (Cummins), nieces Dr. Alicia Barker (Bruce) and Sandra Ulishney (Adam); nephew Stephen Peek (Maria); two great-nieces; and four great-nephews.
He valiantly struggled with a long illness, that ultimately claimed his life. Jerry will be remembered as a hard-working family man, a devoted Christian, and by his unwavering love of family.
A visitation to honor Jerry’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 10th, 2025, from 1:30-2:45 pm at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm, officiated by Jimmy Clark and Randy Robertson. Jerry will be laid to rest at Roselawn Cemetery, with Daryl Malone, Steve Peppers, Duane Bailey, Jimmy Adams, Brandon Pepper, Jeff Thompson, and Kurt Wood serving as pallbearers. Jerry’s first cousins will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Affinity Hospice in Madison.
