Elizabeth Idella “Sparky” Simmons, age 76 of Winchester, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Highpoint Health Medical Center. A native of Franklin County, she was born in Winchester on December 14, 1948, to the late Junior and Alma (Simmons) Fuqua. Before her retirement, Elizabeth had been employed by the Franklin County Board of Education for over forty years as a cook at Mary Sharp and Clark Memorial. She loved to cook, especially if it was preparing for a gathering with her beloved family. A true Christian lady, she was a member of Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church. She will be remembered for her loving, nurturing, and caring nature. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Mary Fuqua, Mark Fuqua, Margaret Brown, James Fuqua, Marvin Fuqua, and Doris “C Bug” Simmons; granddaughter, Carmen Simmons; and nephew, Rontez Fuqua. Elizabeth is survived by her loving son, Jerry L. (Susan) Simmons; custody children, JoeAnn Simmons Fenderson and Garieon Simmons; brothers, Willie Fuqua Jr, Pete (Natalie) Fuqua, and Michael Anthony (Estella) Fuqua; sisters, Jody Simmons, and Alma Fuqua; sisters-in-law, Linda Fuqua, Wilma Fuqua, and Frankie Wilson; grandchildren, Samara Simmons, and Jayda Simmons; great-grandchildren, Cayden, Kyree, Luca, and Nova Simmons; uncle, James (Dora) Simmons; two special nieces, Sonya Simmons and Shannon Burks; three great-nieces, Kendra Burks, Sontia Simmons and Shauntia Cook; special friends, Earnstine Trimble, Frances Corn, Marylan Corn; and special cousin, Tincy Compton. Visitation will be from 1-2 pm on Monday, June 30, 2025, at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral Services will follow at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Interment will be at Franklin Memorial Gardens with William Fuqua, Maurico Fuqua, Earl Fuqua, JaCarl Fuqua, Pete Fuqua, and Mike Fuqua serving as pallbearers and Willie Fuqua, Loanza Burks and Steve Cook, serving as honorary pallbearers.
