James “Jimmy” Smith, age 80, of Decatur, Alabama, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2025, at his residence. Born on October 26, 1944, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Raymond Ervin Smith and Ellen Blanchard Smith, Jimmy lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love.

A 1962 graduate of Decatur High School, Jimmy proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1966, stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Following his military service, he built a fulfilling career as a Lab Technician, retiring in 1998 from Monsanto, also known as Solutia.

Jimmy was a man of unwavering faith and kindness, known for his generous spirit and readiness to help anyone in need. Above all, he cherished his role as a husband, father, and “Pawpaw,” a title he held dear. His greatest joy came from his beloved grandchildren, who brought light and love into his life.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Joe (Donna) Smith and Tom Dressel. Jimmy is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Linda King Smith; daughter, Lorie Smith; son, Joey (Michelle) Smith; grandchildren, Hayden (Cori) Smith, Hunter Smith, Baylee (Devin) Luna, and Alissa (Logan) Moody; great-grandchildren, Aubree Smith, Boston Smith, and Peyton Moody; sisters, Linda Smith (Frank) Eady and Jan (Dennis) Dearborn; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 3:00 PM at his home in Decatur, where family and friends are invited to come and go as needed, sharing memories and photos in honor of Jimmy’s life.
Shelton Funeral Home of Decatur is honored to serve the Smith family during this time of remembrance.

Jimmy’s legacy of love, faith, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
