Carl Mancel Middleton, beloved husband, father and “Papa” passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones, on April 27, 2023, at the age of 92. He was born on November 9, 1930, to James Abner Middleton and Edith Goodman Middleton in Phenix City, Alabama.
Carl was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving honorably for 20 years. After retiring from the Navy as Chief Petty Officer, the family settled in Huntsville. He attended North Alabama College of Commerce and was Customer Service Manager at Lanier, retiring after 25 years. In his retirement years, he served on mission trips building churches around the Southeast, traveled with Peggy, stayed up-to-date on the latest technology, and played golf-his favorite hobby. He was a faithful member of Highlands Baptist Church and Hillwood Baptist Church in Huntsville. Carl was a long-time Mason. His greatest joy was spending family time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, James Middleton and Edith Middleton; grandson, Andrew Bigoney; brothers, James Middleton and William Middleton; and sisters, Lillian Oates and Minnie Quinn.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Peggy A. Middleton; his children, Carl Michael Middleton, Theresa Hill (Mark), and Barbara Bigoney (Richard); his grandchildren, R.J. Oswald (Shannon), Allison Hendrix (Thomas), Austin Bigoney, Stephen Hill (Cassidy), Ashley Hancock (Jake), and Anna Butler (Brandon); his great-grandchildren, June and Benjamin Hendrix, and Lydia and Parker Hancock; his brother, Jimmy Middleton (Vernell); and sisters, Maudie Garrett and Louise Dempsey.
The family would like to express special thanks to Crestwood Hospital, Gentiva Hospice Care, Hillwood Baptist Church, and Covenant Presbyterian Church, who loved and cared for Carl, and for the prayers and support of family and friends.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 3rd, 2023, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 11:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.
The family requests memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
