George Jacovides, 90, of Huntsville, passed away Monday. George was a native of Limassol (Lemosos), Cyprus, where he lived until he completed his secondary education at the local Gymnasion (High School). His musical foundation began early. He studied music under composer and professor Solon Michaelides of Sorbonne University, Paris. Following graduation from Gymnasion, he attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
During the Korean conflict, he was drafted in the US Army for a two year tour of duty, returned to TVA, and acquired his US Citizenship. During that time, he married his sweetheart, Jeannette. In 1962, he accepted a position with the US Army Missile Command in Huntsville. He retired with a total of 48 years of civilian service.
When the family moved to Huntsville in 1963, together with a handful of Greek Orthodox faithful, he was instrumental in establishing the Huntsville Greek Orthodox Church, where he spent 60 years as Choir Director.
Survivors include his children, Dino Jacovides (Julie) and Lydia Hale (Michael); and grandchildren, Emily and Olivia.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 24 at Holy Cross Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. The funeral will follow at the church with Father Paul Costopoulous officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
