Jim Mercer, Sr. – Obituary

Jim Mercer, Sr., 79, of Huntsville, passed away Tuesday.  Mr. Mercer owned his own clothing store, Hamrick & Mercer Menswear in Cedartown, GA.  He had a passion for the automotive business and worked as a car salesman with Bentley Automotive Group from 1981 until 2018.  He was a past Elder at Farley Church of Christ from 1997 until 2001 and a member of the Church of Christ since 1951.  He was present member of Huntsville Park Church of Christ where he led singing and promoted congregational singing throughout the south eastern U.S.   As a very proud family man, he loved to brag on his children and grandchildren. He had a passion for stockcar racing and loved spending time with his grandchildren and watching them play ball.  He had a special place in his heart for his granddaughters.  Some of his hobbies he enjoyed with his sons, grandchildren, Ray Jones and B.J. Strickland, were fishing and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Mary Ellen Mercer and brothers, Jerry and Bob Mercer.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Glenda Mercer; sons, Jimmy Smyth Mercer, Jr. (Carol) of Centre, Steven Anderson Mercer (Teri) of Huntsville, and Jeffrey Bryan Mercer, Sr., (Emmie) of Searcy, AR; sister, Frances Strickland (B.J.) and Libby Jones (Ray, Sr.), all of Huntsville; twelve grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home.  The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Huntsville Park Church of Christ with Steven Anderson Mercer officiating.  Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
