Myra Hammond Campbell – Obituary

Myra Hammond Campbell, 98, of Florence, passed away on March 21, 2018, at Mitchell-Hollingsworth Nursing Home. Myra was born on April 29, 1919, near the community of Anderson, Alabama in Lauderdale County, and lived in Florence since 1947. She was a graduate of Martin Methodist College in Tennessee and Florence State Teachers College (UNA). Myra was a teacher in Lauderdale County before she began serving for more than 40 years as secretary to superintendents of the Lauderdale County School System. She remained active in retirement as a gardener; as a member of Windsor Heights Garden Club, the Florence Pilot Club, RSVP, and the Lauderdale County Retired Teachers Association; as an elections officer; and as a sitter and caregiver for retired residents in the community until she was in her early nineties. She resided at Brookdale Senior Living since 2014 before moving recently to Mitchell-Hollingsworth.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 PM, on Sunday, March 25, at Greenview Funeral Home, and services will be held at 2 PM, in the Greenview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Cemetery.

Myra is survived by her children, Glenn “Andy” Campbell, of Portland, Oregon; Edith Campbell Howard Wood and her husband Grady, of Florence, Alabama; Larry Campbell and his wife Stephanie of Alexandria, Virginia; and Clyde Campbell and his wife Debbie, of Hoover, Alabama. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ben and Chris Howard of Florence, Alabama; Colleen, Eleanor, and Katherine Campbell of Alexandria, Virginia; and Anna Autry and Jacob Campbell, of Hoover, Alabama. She is also survived by nieces and nephews and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her former husband William L. “Bill” Campbell, who died in 1973, her parents Van and Belle Hammond, and her seven siblings: brothers Wayne, Hugh, Murray, Ralph, Roy, Lowell, and sister Lucille Hammond McKinney Greene.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the YMCA of the Shoals or the Alabama Education Retirees Foundation.
