John Wayne Wood – Obituary

 John Wayne Wood, age 71, passed away at his residence on Dec. 19, 2017.

Visitation will be at Pinkard Funeral Home, Russellville, today from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be Eddie Wix. Burial will take place at the Macedonia Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Wood was born Nov. 15, 1945, in Decatur, Alabama. His family moved to Chicago when he was three then later moved to Carpentersville, Illinois when he was nine. He graduated from Barington Consolidated High School in 1965. He was a huge fan of Alabama Crimson Tide football. Mr. Wood was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church where he served as deacon and treasurer. He retired from the Alabama National Guard 115th Signal Battalion after 36 years of service, 24 of those being full-time.

He was preceded in death by his oldest son, John Wayne Wood Jr.; his parents, John Wallace Wood Jr. and Frannie Vinson Wood; a sister, Mary Frances Wood Burfield; and grandparents, John Wallace Sr. and Bertha Wood and Archie and Pallie Vinson.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Leigh Wood, a son, Brandon Lee Wood and special friend, Kristy Wallace, and a sister, Ann Bailey (Donald Ray), all of Russellville; two granddaughters who were the light of his life, Brittany Wood, of Huntsville, and Brianna Wood, of Russellville; and loving nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jeremy Bailey, John Riley Bailey, Hoyt Wayne Burfield Jr., Hugh Smith, Keith Lindsey, Jason Howell, and honorary pallbearer Bobby Miller.

Special thanks and appreciation are extended to ECM Hospital third floor nurses and staff and to Dr. Sean Rhuland, Kindred Home Health, and Hospice of North Alabama.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Macedonia Baptist Church at 37050 Hwy 24, Russellville, AL 35654.
