88 year old Hugh Robert, “Bob”, Shuttleworth ended his earthly journey Sunday December 17th early in the morning at Decatur Morgan Hospital, Decatur General Campus. After a hard fought 3 year battle with infections, he succumbed to multiple infections including pneumonia.
Visitation will be Friday, December 22nd at Shelton Funeral Home from 10 am until Noon, followed by the funeral service, with Rev. Jess Montegudo officiating.
His Journey began in Perry County Ohio. He shared his early life with his parents, Hugh Campbell Shuttleworth and May Dennis Shuttleworth. He also had 2 brothers, Clyde and George. He was also blessed with 3 sisters, Irene, Ruth, and Margie. Another sister died at birth.
After his father’s death, Clyde moved the family to Columbus, Ohio. Bob attended North High School. He graduated from Muskingum College where he played basketball. He entered the army for 2 years playing basketball and fast pitch softball. He met the love of his life, Marie Dowdy at Ft. Jackson in Columbia South Carolina. After leaving the army he returned to Ohio, coaching and being a principal at several high schools before moving to the college level in Jackson Tennessee at Lambuth College as an assistant basketball coach and coaching several other sports.
In 1966 he moved his family to Decatur Alabama where he helped built the new junior college athletic system in Alabama. He coached several nationally ranked teams at Calhoun Community College. In 2004 he was selected for the Morgan County and Alabama Junior College Hall of Fame, where many of his former players returned to pay homage to a man who coached them in basketball, but prepared them for life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife. He is survived by his daughter, Bobby F. Shuttleworth; son, Mathew A. Shuttleworth and wife Debbie Kelly Shuttleworth; Granddaughters Tiffany and Husband Robin Dial, (of Hattiesburg, Mississippi), Sarah Shuttleworth and Windsor Roddam; and great grandson Camden McCrary, (of Hattiesburg, Mississippi).
Pallbearers will be former basketball players. Honorary pallbearers will be current and former members of the Calhoun Community College H.P.E.R. and Athletic Departments.
In lieu of flowers, financial contributions can be made to reinstatement of the Calhoun Community College Athletic Department, C/O the J.C. Calhoun Foundation, P.O. Box 2216 Decatur, Al. 35609. His request is to make these donations in memory of his late wife, Marie Shuttleworth.
