TUSCUMBIA-Labor Day is all about honoring the working men and women, America’s foundation. We want to give honor to them on this day. Labor Day in Spring Park is more than just a tradition it is about

Giving respect to all workers before us that fought for fair wages, Decent working hours and good healthcare. You can thank those union workers through the years for bringing you this weekend.

The Shoals Area Labor Council and local unions invite everyone out to be a part of the C Labor Day Celebration this year in Spring Park.

The Parade will begin at 10:00 A.M. from Deshler High School and march down Main Street in Tuscumbia and end in Spring Park. Rep Marcel Black will be this year’s Grand Marshal. Pageant participants, vintage car clubs, motorcycle and ATV clubs, local union floats, candy throwing, local and state officials will all be there to join in the fun.

What better tradition could you support in these times than honoring our area’s working men and women. They are the real backbone of this country we love, the good ole USA ! This is one thing you can come and enjoy that is totally still ” Made In the USA.”

The Shoals Area Central Labor Council, received its first charter March

1, 1919 from the American Federation of Labor. After the merger of

American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial

Organization, in 1955. the Shoals Area Central Labor Council received a new charter from the AFL-CIO November 12, 1957, Officers listed on charter were Hassel Bailey, George Pinkston, Genia Tidwell, Dennis Pinkston, Julian Bailey, Alvin Gray and Goildie Spegiel.

Labor Day in Spring Park, Tuscumbia, Alabama has become a tradition. The event has been held each year since 1919, with the exception of the war years. The celebration is sponsored by the Shoals Area Central Labor Council and affiliated Local unions. It is the oldest continuous

Labor Day celebration in the Nation. Usually begins with a parade at 10:00 down Main Street in Tuscumbia to Spring Park. The festivities begin at 11:00 am. with the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance and the Shoals Area Color Guard. Speeches are made by Labor Officials, Senators Congressman, Governors, local office holders and others. Entertainment by a live band, food and cool drinks. A Beauty Contest and drawing for prizes donated by local business and entertainment. There is no charge. The parade was stopped after the September 1972 Labor Day. The parade was started back in September 2000.

Labor Day 1980, will go down in history, because President Jimmy Carter chose Spring Park, Tuscumbia, Alabama as the place to launch his 1980 Re-election Campaign. It was the largest Labor Day Rally, with about eight thousand people attending. The Shoals Area Central Labor Council has members living in all areas of the Greater Shoals Area of North Alabama.

The Shoals Area Central Labor Union covers Lauderdale. Colbert, Franklin and Lawrence County of Alabama.
