DECATUR-The Decature Police Department issued a press release concerning the Ford Interceptor SUV Police version of Ford Explorer on Friday, August 4:

“There have recently been multiple reports of police officers driving the Ford Interceptor SUV, the police version of the Ford Explorer, being overcome by carbon monoxide fumes emitted by the vehicle.

After a preliminary investigation, Ford released a statement saying that the problem was the result of holes being drilled in the body of the vehicle by upfitters installing aftermarket emergency equipment and the associated wiring.

All of the SUV’s purchased by the Decatur Police Department were ordered pre-wired from the factory so, if this is indeed the
source of the problem, our vehicles will not be affected. However, since the information is preliminary and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has also initiated an investigation, the Decatur Police Department contacted the
Decatur Lowe’s to get a price quote for carbon monoxide detectors to install in our SUV’s.

A short time later, Joey Williams, the assistant manager of the Decatur Lowe’s, sent an employee to the front desk of the Decatur Police Department with enough carbon monoxide detectors to equip all of the department’s SUV’s. The employee told the officers that Lowe’s was donating the detectors to the
department to insure the safety of our officers until the investigations were complete and any necessary repairs made to our vehicles.

The Decatur Police Department would like to recognize the Decatur Lowe’s for their generosity and thank them, as well as Assistant Manager Joey Williams, for the donation of the carbon monoxide detectors.”
