Vicki Gey Bedingfield, 64, of Athens, passed away Aug. 5, 2016, at her home surrounded by her closest family.
She was born May 24, 1952. She was the daughter of Lerman R. Gey and Mauvolean Claxton Gey.
She was born and raised in the heart of the Germantown area of Limestone County and was very proud of her German heritage, including making a trip to Dresden, Germany, with her father to research their genealogy. She was a graduate of Athens Bible School and loved music of all kinds. She loved to sing and play guitar.
In recent years, her heart bled red, white and blue and she enjoyed working with “her veterans” at the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives. She proudly showed her patriotism, singing the national anthem at numerous events from Huntsville Stars baseball games to city functions. She was instrumental in the success of her husband’s photography business, traveling and assisting with events and conventions all over the South.
She was an avid reader and very active with her church, hosting weekly ladies’ Bible study at her house. She also loved to work in her garden, to sew and make clothing for her loved ones, and to travel — especially to the beach.
She loved Athens and said she couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. She volunteered with numerous organizations, most famously the Poke Sallet Follies to raise funds for the Athens-Limestone Foundation on Aging. She will continue to give as she has donated her body to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical School for research.
She was very proud of her family and considered her greatest achievement to be her daughters and her grandchildren. She was married to the love of her life for 44 wonderful years, a true testament to their love for and dedication to each other.
She was preceded in death by both parents.
She is survived by her husband, Roger Bedingfield of Athens; two daughters, Whitney Reinhart and husband Dave of Pleasant View, Utah, and Carson Wakefield and husband Brady of Huntsville; one brother, Mark Gey of Athens; one granddaughter, Harlyn Grey Cowart of Tuscaloosa; one grandson, Deacon Reid Cowart of Athens; aunts and uncles; and a multitude of cousins.
Services will be held at Limestone Chapel in Athens. Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 10, from 4-8 p.m. Celebration of Life will be Thursday, Aug. 11, at 6 p.m.
To honor Vicki Bedingfield, the family requests donations be made in memory of Vicki to the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives or to Hospice of Limestone County.
