irs scamMADISON-The Madison Police Department has issued a statement regarding a telephone scam circulating in the area:

“The Madison Police Department would like to inform citizens that a common telephone scam may be aimed at local residents. Residents have reported receiving telephone calls from someone claiming to be the Internal Revenue Service or I.R.S. The caller consistently has a thick foreign accent. The caller tells them they owe delinquent taxes and must call a number to avoid legal trouble or arrest. The caller sometimes already knows the name and address of the intended victim. Madison residents have received calls today from 360 and 281 area codes.

The citizens reporting this activity did not follow the caller’s instructions or fall prey to the scam. The scammer would have likely instructed the citizen to pay via wire transfer or by purchasing a pre-paid money card at a store.
The Madison Police Department would like to remind everyone that government agencies will not telephone people threatening arrest if they don’t remit payment.
