ATHENS-The Grammy-nominated and Athens-based Alabama Shakes are once again supporting the annual fundraiser Hospice of Limestone County Chili Challenge and Silent Auction.
This year, band members autographed their album “Sound and Color” for the silent auction. Lead singer and guitarist Brittany Howard and her father K.J. Howard brought the album by the Hospice office on Friday and presented it to Hospice Volunteer Coordinator Suzanne Paysinger.
The event is Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Athens High School. Ticket holders get to
sample and vote for their favorite chili and bid on items, including the Alabama Shakes album.
“We appreciate Alabama Shakes for always supporting Hospice so that we can provide programs to the community,” said Hospice Executive Director Pat King.
One year, Howard and the band donated a guitar they all autographed.
Hospice of Limestone County is the only non-profit Hospice operating in the county. The Chili Challenge and Silent Auction provide funds for Camp Hope, an annual bereavement camp for children, in-home respite workers, indigent care that is non-funded care and non-Hospice bereavement counseling.
Howard’s grandmother, Helen West, has worked for Hospice since 2003. It was a promise she made when Hospice assisted her during the illness and death of her granddaughter Jamie Howard, Brittany’s sister. Jamie developed a brain tumor and lost her sight and died in 1998 as a teenager.
“Hospice touches so many families in our community,” said Chili Challenge Chairwoman Amanda Speegle. “This event allows the community an opportunity to give back to Hospice.”
Those interested in being a chili challenger or donating at item for the silent auction can call the Hospice office at 256-232-5017.
Tickets for the event are $10 and will be available at the door. A ticket includes lunch and entertainment.
