FRANKLIN COUNTY – On Friday, July 17, at approximately 8:30 p.m., at the request of the
Russellville Police Department, Special Agents assigned to the Alabama Law Enforcement
Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an officer-involved shooting
investigation involving an officer with the Russellville Police Department.
The incident occurred when Russellville Police received a call for service to conduct a welfare
check in a Mobile Home Park, located within Franklin County. Upon arrival, the Russellville
Police Officer encountered an individual actively assaulting a food delivery driver with a knife.
The suspect, later identified as Erik Saul Roman-Martinez, 28, of Russellville, then stabbed the
Officer, causing the Officer to discharge his firearm and fatally wound Martinez.
Both the Officer and delivery driver were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Nothing further is available as the investigation remains ongoing. Once complete, the findings will
be turned over to the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office.
