Funeral for James Max McWhorter, 90, of Moulton will be Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Home with Ray McWhorter, Marlon Rutherford, Mitchell Compton, Gordon Ray and grandsons officiating. Burial will be in Moulton Memory Gardens. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
Mr. McWhorter, who died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, at his residence, was born Nov. 12, 1925, to William Hugh McWhorter and Madge Hill McWhorter. He attended Fairfield Church of Christ. He was in World War II (in the 18th Combat Engineer Battalion). His hobbies were Alabama football, International Tractors and quail hunting. At the young age of 29, Max a faithful member of Fairfield Church of Christ was charged by the Fairfield elders to help establish a congregation at Midway. After attending Midway Church of Christ for 60 years and serving as an elder he returned to his home congregation at Fairfield the last year of his life. During all these years, his loving wife Jackie of 67 years, stood by his side raising five children, making a home for him and his children, supporting him through good and hard times, never complaining. First up in the morning and the last in bed. Spending many hours and days by herself while Max attended to the church’s needs, working at Wolverine and cattle farming. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Larnita McWhorter; son, David Max McWhorter; son-in-law, Carlton Cartee; two brothers, Hugh McWhorter and Kyle McWhorter; brother, Kyle McWhorter; and his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline McWhorter; three daughters, Sheron (Gordon) Ray, Marion Cartee and Vickie (Mitchell) Compton; six grandchildren, Dawn (Mark) Rowe, Jason (Misty) Cartee, Chad (Misty) Ray, McCord (Stacy) Compton, Kevin (Alison) Cartee and Julie Compton; one brother, Ray (Ruby) McWhorter; one sister, Elizabeth (O.D.) Bowling; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.
Honorary pallbearers will be Elders of Fairfield Church of Christ, Gurnie Ghrigsby, Donald Lentz and Alan Wade.
