Marilyn Wiley Shriver, age 76, formerly of Tuscumbia, AL, passed away at her home, surrounded by her children, on Feb. 28, 2015.
Our beautiful, loving mother epitomized elegance and grace. Marilyn… Mom…Gran… Mrs. Shriver… was born in Sheffield, AL, to Lonnie Clinton Wiley and Mary Velma Speck Wiley, on Jan. 6, 1939. Marilyn grew up surrounded by southern love and charm. She was a member of Cotillion, a 1957 graduate of Deshler High School, and attended Florence State University. In 1959, she married Norman William Shriver of Abington, PA, and Ocean City, NJ, and began a wonderful life of travel and adventure in support of his long career as a naval officer.
She enjoyed the closeness of Navy family and friends, and the culture and beauty of different states and countries. Mom had an amazing ability to make every new house a home. Her true gifts included compassion and empathy, selflessness, and the ability to truly listen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Dorothy Wiley Pearson, and her husband and soul mate, Norman. She is survived by her daughters, Melanie Shriver Mulder and husband David, of California, Beth Shriver Hulse and husband David, of Chesapeake, VA, and Paige Shriver Elmér of Linwood, NJ.
Her grandchildren were the light of her life. Christine Jeanette Mulder, David Shriver Mulder, and Catherine Elizabeth Mulder of California; Christine Elizabeth Hulse, LT David Taylor Hulse, LT(jg) Brian Thomas Hulse, and John Christopher Hulse of Virginia, and Emma Louise Jeanette Elmér of Linwood, NJ. They will remember her for her kindness and unconditional love.
She is additionally survived by loving family, especially cousins Patsy Bobo and Bobby Speck, and her Aunt Claudie of Alabama; dear friends Yas and Alice Tana of San Diego, CA, and Jeanne Taylor of Ocean City, NJ.
The family offers a special thank you to Dr. Jerry Horowitz and Holy Redeemer Hospice, especially Liz and Yolanda, her nurse and caregiver.
She will be interred with her husband, Captain Norman William Shriver, USN (Ret), in a private service at the United States Naval Academy Columbarium, in Annapolis, MD.
