walterWalter Bentley Wright passed away Monday. He was born and raised in Grant, AL, on Gunter Mountain, which he called “God’s Country”. He graduated from KDS DAR School in 1967, where he played basketball and baseball. He loved Cathedral Caverns, where he was a guide for many years. At the cave he took care of two African lions; he always had a fondness for cats. After marriage, he moved to Huntsville, AL, where he became a member and at one time a deacon at First Presbyterian Church.

He was a carpenter by trade and took great pride in his work. He enjoyed all the friendships he formed throughout the area from his work. He loved telling stories and being around people; he never met a stranger. He was a lifetime Alabama fan and loved cheering for the Tide. He had a great sense of humor and always enjoyed a party. Nothing made him happier than watching his boys play ball.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Ola Ayers Wright; and brother, Nolton Wright.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Beth Meier Wright; sons, Walter Grant Wright and Winston Cody Wright, who were his pride and joy; siblings, Delphine Wright Veach and Edward Wright; and many more nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 12, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 11a.m. Friday, February 13 in the funeral home chapel. He will be laid to rest at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Old Union Cemetery in Grant, AL.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Walter’s name to First Presbyterian Church at 307 Gates Ave. Huntsville, AL 35801 or to KDS DAR Alumni Association Scholarship Fund at P.O Box 24, Grant, AL 35747.
