DECATUR – After eight and a half years of dedicated service, Decatur Morgan County Tourism President and CEO Danielle Gibson has announced she will step down from her role, closing a chapter of leadership marked by organizational transformation, destination growth, expanded partnerships, new tourism initiatives and a renewed focus on telling the story of Decatur and Morgan County

Among the defining accomplishments of Gibson’s tenure was helping transform both the organization and the way the destination was presented to visitors. Under her leadership, Decatur Morgan County Tourism rebranded the organization, implemented the MoCo brand, opened a new riverfront Visitors Center and launched a new tourism website, among many other highly successful marketing initiatives designed to elevate Decatur and Morgan County as a visitor destination.

At the heart of that work was a commitment to telling the story of Decatur and Morgan County in an authentic way and helping people discover experiences they would remember long after their visit. That vision ultimately came together in a simple but meaningful destination promise: “Where Core Memories Are Made.”

For Gibson, the phrase represents more than a marketing tagline. It reflects a philosophy that tourism is ultimately about people and experiences, whether that is a family traveling for a championship weekend, time spent along the Tennessee River, discovering a local restaurant or mural, attending a festival or experiencing something unexpected for the first time.

Throughout her tenure, Gibson championed tourism as both an economic driver and a source of community pride. Her leadership helped strengthen Decatur and Morgan County’s position as a destination for sports, outdoor recreation, special events, arts, history and authentic local experiences.

During her 8½ years of service, Gibson helped establish the MoCo Mural Trail Grants, which supported the creation of murals in Decatur, Trinity, Falkville and Hartselle, and facilitated multiple grants through the Alabama Tourism Department for special events. She also helped Decatur become an official Tennessee RiverLine RiverTown and championed efforts connected to the Tennessee RiverLine. She worked with the team responsible for bringing the Blue Bike Share program to Decatur and helped establish tourism experiences including the MoCo Mural Trail, MoCo Treat Trail, Art Trail and Unknown Trail. Gibson’s tenure included serving on the Civil Rights CEOTA Board and supporting the development of a major civil rights tourism destination. She also assisted in securing national sporting championships, expanded digital tourism experiences. Her work further included partnering in Decatur’s $18.4 million trail connectivity project.

Additionally, Gibson helped secure partnerships with American Cruise Lines, creating another opportunity to strengthen Decatur’s presence within the river tourism market.

Sports tourism remained a significant focus throughout Gibson’s leadership. She and the DMCT team worked alongside community partners to attract and support national sporting events and championships, bringing athletes, families and visitors to Decatur and Morgan County.

Gibson’s leadership and service have been recognized locally, regionally and statewide. Her honors include:

  • Lynn C. Fowler Non-Profit Professional of the Year, Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce, 2022
  • Tourism Executive of the Year, Alabama Tourism Department, 2022
  • Tourism Professional of the Year, Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association, 2023
  • Vocational Service Award, Rotary Noon Club of Decatur, 2024
  • Extra Mile Award, Tennessee RiverLine, 2021, 2024 and 2025
  • String of Pearls Award, Visit North Alabama PEAK Awards, 2025

While the projects, programs and awards tell part of the story, Gibson said the relationships created throughout her 8½ years of service are among the accomplishments she values most.

“Serving Decatur Morgan County Tourism for the past eight and a half years has truly been one of the greatest honors of my professional career. I want to sincerely thank our Board of Directors and my incredible team for allowing me the opportunity to serve this amazing organization and the community that I love.

“None of what we accomplished happened because of one person. It happened because people believed in a vision, trusted one another and were willing to work together to make big things happen.

“I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished, but what I will treasure most are the relationships, partnerships and friendships built along the way. We dreamed big, tried new things, celebrated our community and worked hard to help others see what makes Decatur and Morgan County so special.

“I leave this chapter with a full heart, tremendous gratitude and an unwavering belief in the future of tourism in Decatur and Morgan County. I will always be proud of what we built together and incredibly thankful that I was given the opportunity to be a part of it.”

Gibson’s tenure was defined by an emphasis on collaboration and partnership, bringing together local businesses, tourism partners, community organizations and public-sector partners around a shared belief in the potential of Decatur and Morgan County.

As Gibson prepares for her next professional chapter, the programs, partnerships and experiences developed during her tenure will continue to play a role in how visitors experience Decatur and Morgan County.
