Katherine “Kathy” Thrasher Darden Burgess, 84, entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, August 7, 2026, in Huntsville, Alabama, after a brief illness.
Born on July 9, 1942, in Gadsden, Alabama, Kathy was the daughter of Rosalie Sloan Thrasher Jordan and Georgy Bynum Thrasher. She attended Marshall County High School and Snead State Junior College before embracing the calling that became her life’s greatest joy—loving and spending time with her family.
Kathy married Norman “Sonny” Darden, Jr. in 1962, and they shared 47 (mostly wonderful) years of marriage until his passing in 2010. Together they built a home filled with love, faith, and devotion, raising four children and establishing the family that became the joy of her life. After Sonny’s passing, Hugh Burgess and Kathy rekindled a high school friendship and enjoyed 10 years of marriage. They especially enjoyed living at Lake Guntersville. He survives her.
In 1970, Kathy experienced the transforming grace of Jesus Christ, and from that day forward her life was anchored by an unwavering faith. She trusted God’s promises, found strength in His Word, and prayed faithfully for the people she loved. Nothing brought her greater joy than seeing her family grow in their faith and walk with Christ.
Kathy was a homemaker in the truest sense of the word. She created a home where people felt welcomed, accepted, and deeply loved. She possessed a joyful spirit, an outgoing personality, and an infectious enthusiasm for life. She loved to laugh, loved to gather her family together, and was never afraid to speak her mind. Those who knew her appreciated her honesty, admired her passion, and were drawn to her generous heart. Whether offering encouragement, celebrating life’s milestones, or simply spending time with family, Kathy made people feel like they mattered.
Family was the delight of her life. She treasured every opportunity to be with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Holidays, birthdays, vacations, ordinary dinners, and simple afternoons together became treasured memories because she was there. Her greatest earthly legacy is not found in possessions or accomplishments, but in generations of family members who knew they were loved, prayed for, and faithfully pointed toward the Lord by her example.
She is survived by her Husband: Hugh Burgess, children: David Darden (Peggy), Kit Genet (Fred), Norman Darden III (Paige), and Randy Darden (Janet); and also by her step-daughter Traci (Ben) Hulgan and their family.
She was a devoted (and doting) grandmother to Michael Darden (Taylor), Mary Claire Williams (Taylor), Claudia Darden, Will Darden (Elizabeth), Thomas Darden (Maddie), Katherine Darden (fiancé Josh Rouse), and John Darden (Margaret).
She was also blessed with seven cherished great-grandchildren: Everly Grace Williams, Brody Flynn Williams, Hadley Kate Williams, Mary Collins Darden, Ann Chase Darden, Virginia Ellen Darden, and Grace Cranford Darden.
She is also survived by her brother- and sister-in-law, Alan and Carolyn Darden, as well as nieces and nephews, Chas Pell, Sloan Pell Armstrong, Christina Darden Hjort, Rene Darden Eiland, Alana Darden Powell and their families.
She was preceded in death by Norman “Sonny” Darden, Jr.; her parents, Rosalie Sloan Thrasher Jordan and Georgy Bynum Thrasher; her step-father David Jordan; and her beloved sister, Rozanne Thrasher.
The family would like to thank special caregivers/friends Freda Houle and Mary Hernandez the wonderful staff at Lakeshore Senior Living in Guntersville, and her many friends at Lakeshore.
While Kathy’s family mourns her absence, they rejoice in the certainty that she is now completely healed and forever in the presence of her Savior that she loved so deeply. The faith that sustained her throughout her life has now become sight.
A family viewing will be held on Sunday, August 9, at 12:00 p.m., followed by visitation from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 2:00 p.m., with burial immediately following at Memory Hill Cemetery in Albertville. Mr. Thomas Grady will be officiating. Pallbearers will be Michael Darden, Taylor Williams, William Darden, Thomas Darden, John Darden and Josh Rouse, Buddy Pell and Connor Herfurth.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Shepherd’s Cove Hospice in Albertville.
Arrangements are entrusted to Albertville Memorial Chapel.
