Marlin Wayne Staton

  Marlin Wayne Staton, age 88, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2026. He was born on December 7, 1937, in Blount County, Alabama, to Hershel and Ethel (Morton) Staton. Wayne was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Scottsboro. He retired from Revere Copper and Brass, where he worked as a tension mill operator. Wayne had many interests throughout his life, but few brought him as much enjoyment as golf. His love for the game began at a very early age while working at a golf course in Marshall County, Alabama. That early experience grew into a lifelong passion, and Wayne continued playing golf for as long as he was physically able. He also loved traveling, fishing, and gardening. Wayne especially enjoyed the many road trips he took across the United States with friends and fellow church members. Those journeys provided countless experiences, memories, and friendships that he treasured throughout his life. Music was another important part of Wayne’s life. An avid collector, he accumulated records, tapes, and jukeboxes over the years and had a special appreciation for bluegrass music. Above all, Wayne’s life was centered around the people he loved. He is survived by his daughter, Melanie (Steve) Johnson, and Tim Haston; his grandchildren, Ben (Robyn) Johnson, Tyler (Mary Margaret) Johnson, Paige (Garon) Machen, Sydney (Brandon) McGee, Corey Haston, Chris Haston, Anthony (Keisha) Haston, Wimberly (Cade) Smith, and Windsor Haston; his sister, Brenda Gass; as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 42 years, Carolyn Staton; his sons, Steve Staton and Richard Haston; his parents, Hershel and Ethel Staton; and his siblings, Laverne Staton, Novis Staton, Lowell Staton, Darrell Staton, Glenneth Staton, Kenneth Staton, Jean Sparkman, and Christine Colquitt. Wayne will be remembered for his devotion to family, his faith, the friendships he formed throughout his life, and his enthusiasm for the things that brought him joy. Whether he was on the golf course, tending a garden, listening to bluegrass music, fishing, or setting out on another road trip, Wayne embraced the experiences and people that made life meaningful. His family and friends will cherish the many memories made with him throughout his 88 years.
