Update from the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office in regards to the officer-involved shooting that took place on June 15, 2026 in Decatur:
DECATUR— At the request of the agencies involved, the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division responded to Decatur on Monday to lead the investigation into an officer-involved shooting.
The incident occurred while personnel from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, and Decatur Police Department were conducting an operation involving a wanted individual identified as Nicholas Scott Terry, 37, of Leighton, Alabama.

During the operation, officers observed Terry exit Lowe’s and enter a vehicle. A marked patrol vehicle, a uniformed officer, and additional officers displaying police identifiers, including visible badges and police patch panels, approached Terry. Officers identified themselves as law enforcement and issued verbal commands.
During the encounter, Terry produced a firearm from his waistband and discharged the weapon at officers. Three officers returned fire, striking Terry multiple times. Two officers sustained minor injuries during the incident.
Terry was transported to a local hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries and is listed in stable condition.
At the time of the incident, Terry was wanted on multiple felony warrants.
Investigators with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division are actively reviewing video footage, processing evidence, and conducting witness interviews as part of the ongoing investigation.
