DECATUR-The 2022 Bass Pro Shops/Cabela’s King Kat Classic will make an appearance in the River City next month where as many as 100 anglers from across the United States are expected to compete. Hosted by Decatur Morgan County Tourism, the two-day tournament will take place November 4-5, 2022, at Ingalls Harbor in Decatur.
The Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trails is an opportunity for catfish anglers to compete for cash, prizes and a chance to advance to the 2022 Bass Pro Shops/Cabela’s King Kat Classic scheduled on Wheeler Lake next month.
While Wheeler Lake is a well-known destination for bass fisherman, it is also considered a hot spot for huge catfish. During the King Kat USA tournament held last year out of Decatur the winning team had a two-day catch of over 230 pounds of big blues, including the monster 93.19-pounder that was big fish of the event. In previous tournaments hosted in the River City, anglers have traveled from across the eastern half of the United States including Indiana, Mississippi, Ohio, Montana, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, Illinois, West Virginia and Missouri as well as from within Alabama to compete in the popular catfish-angling tournament.
Launch time is set for 6:30 a.m. and tournament hours are from 6:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. All anglers must be in weigh-in line by 4 p.m. at Ingalls Harbor located at 802 Wilson Street NW. Take-offs and weigh-ins are open to the public with free admission.
Children are invited to participate in the Kids Fishing Rodeo held in conjunction with the tournament. The activity is free for youth up to 12 years old. Each participant receives a prize and is entered to win one of six ($1,000) college scholarships drawn annually.
Launching in 2003, the King Kat Trail is the largest catfish tournament organization in the United States.
