tr5MORGAN COUNTY-On May 13, 2025, Agents with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Drug Enforcement Unit executed a search warrant in the 2100-block of Highway 20 in Decatur. Leading up to the warrant, Agents made contact with two subjects at a nearby business. Those subjects were identified as:
Damian Hernandez, 21,
Isaias Miguel Mateo, 27,
both of Decatur, and two of the subjects of the investigation.
During the execution of the search warrant, Agents located over four ounces of presumed cocaine, a quantity of marijuana, a quantity of methamphetamine, a firearm, and United States currency believed to be drug proceeds.
After conducting field interviews, Agents placed Hernandez and Mateo under arrest for
▪️Trafficking in Cocaine
▪️Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance
▪️Possession of Marijuana 2nd. Both subjects were transported to the Morgan County Jail without incident. Bond $11,300.00
The presumed cocaine recovered by Agents during this operation field tested positive as such. However, Agents also conducted a field test of the cocaine using a fentanyl test kit, and it, too, yielded a positive result. Based on training and experience, Agents determined the substance to likely be cocaine. However, the substances will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences (DFS) for further forensic analysis.
This does not mean that many controlled substances recovered by Agents and other law enforcement personnel do not contain trace amounts of fentanyl. It is an assertion by the Morgan County Drug Enforcement Unit that if a substance has common characteristics such as appearance, texture, and smell observed during the investigation, Agents will make a due regard decision on criminal charges. In the event that DFS uncovers trace amounts of fentanyl, the decision for proper criminal charges rests on the Morgan County District Attorney’s Office.
In the State of Alabama, the law describes Trafficking in Cocaine as being in excess of 28 grams. In this case, the substance was well above the required threshold. In the event fentanyl is found to be in this substance and due to it not being a single component of fentanyl, the law advises that a Trafficking in Illegal Drugs-Fentanyl charge would require a threshold of greater than four grams.
Arrests are public information. Any indication of an individual’s arrest does not imply they have been convicted of a crime. All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
