FLORENCE-In November 2014 Alabama enacted a photo voter ID law requiring registered voters to show state-issued photographic identification when voting.
A consequence of this legislation is that Alabama citizens who are unable to drive or who do not live near a Department of Motor Vehicles office are unable to vote. Because they do not possess state-issued identification they have no voice in electing the officials who will represent them locally, in Montgomery, or in Washington D.C.
To assist local voters in fully participating in the democratic process the Shoals unit of the League of Women Voters of Alabama, in collaboration with the office of the Secretary of State, will host the Photo Voter ID Mobile Unit in Florence on October 4th. This free event will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Magnolia Gardens and from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Cherry Hill Homes.
To receive a free state-issued Photo Voter ID Cards each participant must complete an application and provide a non-governmental photo ID, such as an employee ID badge. If no photo ID is available participants may present non-photo identity documents which contain their full legal names and dates of birth, such as birth certificates, marriage records, or nursing home records. You must be registered to vote in Alabama to participate.
Alabama residents who wish to register to vote in advance of the event may do so online at https://sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/voter/register-to-vote.
The League of Women Voters of Alabama is a non-partisan political organization which encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and which works to influence public policy through education and advocacy. www.lwval.org.
