FLORENCE-The Florence Indian Mound Museum, in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority, is sponsoring a virtual speaker series as a part of an effort to raise awareness about looting in the Shoals area. The Shoals Archaeological Stewardship Virtual Speaker Series will feature a different presentation each month from March through October. The first presentation will be Dr. Lisa Davis, who will present her work on paleoflood records in the Tennessee River valley. Dr. Davis’ presentation can be viewed at the following link on Friday, March 26th at 12 pmtva.com/thousandeyes

Dr. Davis is an associate professor of Geography at the University of Alabama and her research focuses on paleoflood records that cover hundreds and thousands of years. Because these records often pre-date human habitation in the Tennessee River Valley, they allow researchers to map the interaction between changes in floods and climate. This presentation will examine how floods have changed over the last 7,500 years in the Tennessee River Valley and discuss the role that archeological sites have played in helping to keep paleoflood deposits preserved.

This program is free and is part of the Thousand Eyes Program initiative to stop the looting of archaeological sites in the Shoals. It is sponsored by the City of Florence Department of Arts and Museums and the Tennessee Valley AuthorityThe Florence Indian Mound Museum is located at 1028 S. Court St. Florence, AL and is open, Tuesday – Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Call 256-760-6427 for more information.
