MONTGOMERY-As part of routine alcohol enforcement, Alcohol Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday, July 1, located and seized one 500-gallon moonshine still and one 55-gallon moonshine still at a Winston County business.
Located in the 17,000 block of Highway 278 in the Double Springs area, the stills also contained condensers, pumps, barrels and pipes. On the site were also approximately 400 gallons of mash, 150 gallons of moonshine, one 55-gallon barrel of corn and 25 pounds of yeast. Agents then located approximately 250 gallons of moonshine whiskey at a related residence in the 2,000 block of Winston County 18. In addition, a 55-gallon drum of sugar, a bar set up on the property with gambling tables, 101 12-ounce beers of various brands and 3 liters of liquor were located. Two vehicles that were used to store the moonshine whiskey on both properties were seized by the Winston County Sheriff’s Office.
Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier said, “Our SBI Alcohol Unit is charged with statewide alcohol enforcement. These Agents are dedicated to bringing illegal activities, including moonshine production, to a halt.”
SBI Agents were assisted by the Double Springs Police Department, Winston-Marion County District Attorney’s Office, Winston County Sheriff’s Office and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
