Sallie Julia Jones Brooks was born May 23, 1933, to Mary Sims Jones and Glyndon Lee Jones, of Macedonia, Alabama. She attended Pine Level, Alabama Elementary School, Troy Elementary and High School, and graduated from Sidney Lanier High School, Montgomery. She attended Florence State Teachers College (UNA). She married S.K. Brooks Jr. in San Francisco, California on Sept. 27, 1954 when he was in the Navy. She lived for a brief time in Dallas, Texas and the rest of her married life at Brooks Acres, Killen, Alabama.
She loved her family. She enjoyed traveling to all 50 states and several foreign countries. She was a member of the Lauderdale County Republican Executive Committee, Women Farmers Federation Leadership Committee, and Cattlewomen. She was a long time member of Killen First Baptist Church, a member of Randall Weaver’s Sunday School Class, and a member of the Christian Women’s Club.
Mrs. Brooks enjoyed spending time outdoors especially sitting on the porch in her wheelchair reading. Her favorite books were the Bible and any book she was currently reading. She loved the poem “High Flight” by John Gillespie Magee Jr. and her favorite words were omnipotence, perseverance and mesothelioma because she loved to find as many words as she could from one word. Her love and sense of humor were boundless.
She loved mayonnaise and peeling tomatoes and figs, and her favorite foods were steak, brussel sprouts, salad with ranch dressing, and pound cake. Her favorite color was blue.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Brooks was also preceded in death by a sister, Cora Lillian Derrick, and a brother, Glyndon Jones Jr.
She is survived by her loving husband, Spinks K. Brooks Jr.; children, Kenneth F. Brooks (Toni), of Sheffield, Brian Brooks, Brad Brooks (Melissa), and Craig Brooks, all of Killen; grandchildren, Danyelle Brooks Lancaster (Lindsey), of Florence, Jessie Skipworth (Ben), of Nashville, and William Brooks, of Killen; many loving nieces and nephews; special friend, Daphne Simpkins; and honorary friend, Mr. Rick Bragg.
Visitation will be today from noon until 2 p.m. at Spry-Williams Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with Brother David McKelvey officiating. Burial will be at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Leon Smith, Frank Derrick, Harley Stutts, Ron Maxwell, Dennie Robinson, and Oneal Lovett.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any library of your choice or the Killen Baptist Church.
