August 15, 2026 at the age of 79 while at home in Anniston, AL.

Carl is survived by his wife, Bernadette Hays; his brothers Alan Hays, George Hays,
Forrest Hays, Dean Hays, and Clay Hays; his children, Charles Hays and Colan Hays; his
grandchildren, Clay Hays and Hazel Hays; his great-grandson, Carter Hays; and many
other nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by his brother, Robert Hays; His
parents Carl Hays II and Juanita Hays.

Carl was born in Portland, Oregon on May 17, 1947 to Carl J. Hays II and Juanita Hays. He first enlisted in the Army in 1966 and spent the next 20 years 4 months and 16 days
serving as an MP for the United States Military. He married Bernadette, the fire under his ass, on April 15, 1971.
On October 17, 1972 and November 2, 1976 respectively, he welcomed his 2 healthy sons, who continued to be the most important part of his life.

Carl was a devoted husband, proud public servant, and avid political historian. He
enjoyed spending his retired days with Bernadette watching NCIS and traveling the
Caribbean. After 20 plus distinguished years of military service, he continued to
volunteer with community organizations as a life member of Anniston Elks Lodge #189,
10 years Commander of Jacksonville American Legion Post #57, Veterans of Foreign
Wars, and Disabled Veterans. He was a skilled carpenter and problem-solver who often
took on difficult and unwanted projects at work and around the house. Most of all, he
was a proud father and devout husband of 55 years who said he was most grateful for
the love of a wonderful woman. He will be deeply missed and joyfully remembered by his friends, family, and all who knew him.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held 10 AM Friday, August 21, 2026 at Forestlawn Memorial Gardens in Anniston with Chaplain Michael Dunbar of the Jacksonville American Legion Post #57 officiating.
