TUSCUMBIA-Russell Gulley, former member of the MSS/Capitol group Jackson Highway will perform a solo show in the lobby of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame Tuesday March 31 at 7 p.m.
Gulley, bassist with the group Jackson Highway, launched a solo career as a Blues performer in 2004 with the release of his first solo CD “Back to the Swamp.” “I call my sound acoustic Muscle Shoals swamp blues,” he said. “As a solo artist, I sounded more and more traditional or roots.”
The release revitalized his recording career after two decades out of the studio. The previous release had been the 1980 MSS/Capitol recording, “Jackson Highway” album, which captured the Southern Rock group’s hard rocking attitude. It was produced by Jimmy Johnson and David Hood at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio on the river.
Russell’s solo album was different, it focused on the roots of the music that first influenced him. A mix of Americana blending blues, soul, gospel, country, and rock and roll.
Russell continues to perform around the South appearing at festivals such as the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga, the Eutaw Black Belt Folk Roots Festival, and other venues that support roots, traditional, and original music. He also serves as a DANA trained teaching artist in residence for the Fort Payne City School System in his home town, and travels to schools around the state of Alabama presenting his arts-in-education program.
