Rev. Dr. Robert Edward “Sam” Donald was born on November 6, 1941, in Gibson, Tennessee,
to the late Andrew Donald, Sr. and Georgie Rice Donald. He was the tenth of eleven children
born to this union. On Sunday, June 7, 2026, God called His faithful servant home to eternal
rest.
Rev. Donald was preceded in death by his parents; his five sisters and five brothers; and his
beloved daughter, Patricia Ann Crawley.
He received his early education at Polk Clark Training School in Milan, Tennessee, located in
Gibson County. He later attended Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. Before completing his
undergraduate studies, he answered God’s call to the ministry and enrolled at American Baptist
Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee. There, he devoted himself to theological studies
and earned several degrees, including a Ph.D. and a Doctorate in Theology.
A dedicated and passionate servant of God, Rev. Donald faithfully preached and taught the
Gospel for many years. He served as pastor of Cane Creek Baptist Church in Bemis,
Tennessee, for ten years. He later accepted the call to pastor New Mount Calvary Baptist
Church in Saginaw, Michigan, where he faithfully shepherded the congregation for twenty-five
years. Even after retirement, Rev. Donald continued his ministry and service to the Lord at
Truevine Missionary Baptist Church in Saginaw, Michigan, under the leadership of Pastor Paul
Broadus.
Rev. Donald’s life was marked by unwavering faith, wisdom, compassion, and a deep love for
God’s people. He touched countless lives through his preaching, counseling, and example of
Christian living.
He leaves to honor and cherish his memory his devoted wife, Melba J. Donald; three
daughters, Deborah Atkinson (Horace), Juanita Donald, and Samelba Lewis; one son,
Benedict Donald (Shelly); along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family
members, church family, and many friends whose lives were blessed by his presence and
ministry.
Rev. Donald will also be remembered for the sayings that brought smiles, encouragement, and
wisdom to those around him. Among his favorite expressions were: “I’m tight, but I’m right,”
“Singing won’t take you to heaven, but it sho’ll make you want to go,” and “It’s just nice to be
nice.”
Though his earthly journey has ended, his legacy of faith, service, and love will continue to live
on in the hearts of all who knew him. We thank God for the life and ministry of Rev. Dr. Robert
Edward “Sam” Donald and rejoice in the assurance that he now rests in the presence of his Lord
and Savior
