Mr. Robert “Bob” Mellert, age 86, of Scottsboro, Alabama passed away Sunday August 2, 2020 at Highlands Medical Center of chronic obstructive lung disease and heart disease.
Bob was born in Phillipsburg, NJ. He is survived by his wife Bonnie Hancock Phillips Mellert; daughters Tuesday (Brett) Bigelow, Kristie (John) Frerich, Kimberly (Brandon) Close and Krystal Benton; brother Konrad Mellert, Sr.; grandchildren, Wilson Edwards and Kirstie Kelley; and four nephew and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl Konrad and Edna Tieff Mellert.
Bob served twenty years in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic instructor. He served in the Vietnam War and the Korean War. He served 18 months in Japan and at various Air Force bases in the US. During his career he was recipient of the USAF National Defense Medal, Meritorious Service Commendation Medal, USAF Good Conduct Medal, the Sharp Shooters Medal and Air Force Organizational Excellence Ribbon. He was a member of the USAF Association.
Bob resided in Scottsboro since 1998 and truly loved this town, the community and the people. He also loved his country, was passionately patriotic and had a flag on his lapel at all times. He initiated the name change of Jefferson Drive in Scottsboro to Heroes Drive. He worked tirelessly to bring “The Wall That Heals” Vietnam Wall to Scottsboro in 2002. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and enjoyed helping their members in times of need. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Scottsboro and Hollywood and recently received their 50 year honor pin. He was active member of the American Legion.
After retirement from the Air Force, he had a variety of hobbies. He loved playing golf, bowling, racing cars, working on race cars, building custom golf carts, playing cards, and frequenting the local breakfast restaurants with his buddies. He was a member of Alabama Auto Racing Pioneers, Jackson County Cruisers Cart Club and a past member Scottsboro Country Club.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at Scottsboro Funeral Home with Rev. David Davis, Rev. David Patterson, and Rev. James Jeffery officiating. Pallbearers will be members of the Disabled American Veterans. Burial, with military and masonic honors, will be at Pinehaven Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Scottsboro Funeral Home.
