Rebecca H. Suedmeyer, 73, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family members at Huntsville Hospital on December 6, 2024. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Lois and Carl Suedmeyer, along with her twin sister. Rebecca grew up in the St. Louis area and graduated from Riverview High School and then attended and graduated from secretarial school. Early on, she was employed at the Records Center in St. Louis, and in the 1990’s she and her young son were later transferred to Huntsville. She worked with the Department of Defense in the military training office at Redstone Arsenal, retiring in 2016 after a 30-plus year career. Rebecca enjoyed singing in the choir at Redstone Arsenal. She also relished the friendships made as a member of the Red Hat Society.
The light of her life was her son, Marine Lance Corporal Gregory Suedmeyer. She raised him as a single parent and got him involved with the Young Marines when he was in school. Gregory later joined the Marines and served in Afghanistan. The most tragic moment in Rebecca’s life was when the Marines showed up at her door to inform her that her young son had lost his life in a drunk driver accident while traveling home to Huntsville with his wife, Katelyn, and their dog from Camp LeJeune in 2010.
Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents, Lois and Carl Suedmeyer, son, Lance Corporal Gregory Suedmeyer, and twin sister, Roberta Herd.
Rebecca is survived by her brother, Zane Suedmeyer (Peggy), Farmington, MO; sister, Marilyn Chastain, Newnan, GA; nephews, Bill Womack Newnan, GA and Jason Suedmeyer, St. Louis, MO; nieces, Valerie Williams (Russ), Lake St. Louis, MO, Candice Erbach (John), Huntsville, AL, and Natasha Howard, Huntsville, AL.
