TUSCUMBIA – It was supposed to be a pre-trial conference. Instead Tavares Terrell Garner, 31, admitted his guilt to Circuit Judge Hal Huston, saying that he was ready to get on with his incarceration for the brutal rape of a Sheffield Woman last October. So he plead guilty to 3 felony rape-related counts; first-degree rape, first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary. Two other less severe charges were dropped.
In all Garner was sentenced to 3 life sentences, with the possibility of parole, to be served concurrently. Colbert County District Attorney Bryce Graham, Jr. is reported as saying that, if Garner ever does come up for parole, it will be opposed by the D.A. Office. Graham was pleased with the outcome of the guilty plea. He said that now, the victim will not have to testify in court.
The rape happened at Colbert Square Apartments in October of 2013, and according to Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray, this was a particularly violent incident.
