Obituary of Paul Fredrick Gentle Paul Frederick Gentle, born on December 28, 1958, in Atlanta, Georgia, peacefully passed away on March 12, 2025, at the age of 66. At the time of his passing, he resided in Auburn, Alabama. Paul lived a life enriched by education, cultural exploration, and a profound love for teaching.

Paul’s academic journey after high school was honored with an appointment to the US Naval Academy. Later in life he wanted to further his education and attended Auburn University, where he earned his Doctorate in 1997. This accomplishment laid the foundation for a distinguished career as an economic advisor for the City of Birmingham, where he served for several years, contributing significantly to the community’s economic strategies and development.

However, it was his tenure as a professor in China that truly captured his heart. For over 15 years, Paul immersed himself in the rich culture and history of the country, where he developed a deep admiration for the respect shown towards educators. His students were not just learners but became family, with whom he shared his contagious laughter, boundless stories, and unwavering enthusiasm for knowledge. Even after his retirement, Paul continued to inspire through his numerous published articles on economics and his dedication to mentoring students at Auburn, many of whom grew to become cherished friends and confidants.

Paul’s legacy is carried forward by his loving siblings: Diane Armistead, Ed Gentle, Tom Gentle, and Judith Gentle. He is predeceased by his sister Patty Rees, father Edgar C. Gentle Jr., and mother Marie Jeanne Gentle. His bond with his sister Diane was particularly strong, as they supported each other through life’s challenges, often reminding one another to “stay strong and bend as the willow” in difficult times.

A service to honor Paul’s life will be held at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 19, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. In remembering Paul, we celebrate a life marked by perseverance, ambition, and an enduring passion for teaching. He faced life’s struggles with courage and determination, always moving forward with strength and grace. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him, reminding us of the importance of resilience and the impact one individual can have on the lives of many.
