SHEFFIELD – The Tennessee Valley Historical Society will hold its Spring Quarterly Meeting on Sunday, 28 April 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at the Sheffield Public Library Conference Room, located at 316 North Montgomery Avenue, Sheffield, AL
A nation and its people’s identity, history, tradition, culture and heritage will only be remembered if such knowledge is passed from one generation to another. A Dakota Nation proverb sums up the importance of this transfer process outcome: “We will be known forever by the tracks we leave.”
Dr. Carolyn Barske, UNA Assistant Professor of History, whose students enrolled in the Introduction to Public History course offered last fall at UNA launched an oral history project in conjunction with the Tennessee Valley Historical Society to capture local knowledge and history, will open the quarterly session by sharing the importance of oral history projects in insuring that the tracks left today will be known forever by future generations.
After Dr. Barske’s introductory remarks, Clint Alley, Florence/Lauderdale Public Library’s Digital Archivist and Public History student, will share some of the lessons he has learned while working on oral history projects for the FLPL and the Public History program. Calvin Liles, Hannah Garmon and Kevin Bailey will also share their experiences participating in the Public History/TVHS Oral History Project this past fall.
The meeting is free to the public. All are invited to attend.
Refreshments will be served at the meeting’s conclusion.
