Norman M. Shapiro, 97, of Huntsville, passed away Wednesday, July 30th. He was born in Manhattan and graduated from City College of New York with a degree in Physics. Norman was a World War II veteran and served in Europe with the 102nd Infantry Division. He retired in 1977 as Deputy Director of MICOM’s Research Laboratory. He then turned to local history research and contributed several papers on the Civil War period to The Huntsville Historical Review. He was a member of the Huntsville Historical Association and the Tennessee Genealogy Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Goldie Shapiro; his brother, Lee Shapiro; and his sister, Bernice Pincus. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, June Shapiro; his son, Alan Shapiro (Doris); his sister-in-law, Linda Each; and three grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Huntsville Public Library or to a favorite charity.
