Marshall Grant Neely III

WILLIAMSON CO, TN – On Saturday, July 8, 2017, Tyler Noe was bicycling on the Natchez Trace Parkway near the park’s northern terminus. A black Volvo passing the bicyclists struck Noe and caused serious but non-life threatening injuries. The Volvo failed to stop and left the scene. A bicyclist wearing a camera recorded video of the incident.

National Park Rangers and Williamson County Sheriff’s Deputies identified Marshall Grant Neely III, 58, of Franklin, TN as the driver of the vehicle who left the scene.

On July 27, 2017, a federal grand jury in the US District Court, Middle District of Tennessee, indicted Neely on the following three felony counts: reckless aggravated assault, lying to a federal agent, and obstruction of justice.

On July 28, 2017 National Park Rangers arrested Neely at his home without incident.

On May 21, 2018, Neely pleaded guilty to reckless aggravated assault, lying to a federal agent, and obstruction of justice.

On September 4, 2018, Neely was sentenced to 10 months in prison and ordered to pay $2260 in restitution to the victims.

Chief Ranger Sarah Davis stated she was pleased with the outcome.  “Mr. Neely’s actions were reckless and dangerous.  His attempt to cover up the incident cost him and he will serve extra time in prison because of it.  I am proud of the ranger staff who went the extra mile, and put together a strong case that resulted in a stiff penalty.” The Parkway reminds individuals observing aggressive drivers or any unsafe act are encouraged to contact the Natchez Trace Parkway at 1-800-300-PARK (7275).

I was just wondering who’s job is it to keep 18 wheelers off the Trace ! We have seen them going in both directions! There are signs up prohibiting this ! They act as tho they know they won’t get stopped! I hate to think what would happen if one of those hit a cyclist! Thank you !
