Morris Glen Bowers was born in Athens, AL on December 24, 1940, to Clarence and Prudie Mae Bowers. The fourth of six children, he grew up with his family living on Jefferson St in Athens.
He met his wife, a Georgia native, Carolyn in 1961 (at the Hi-Boy Drive In) when she was living with her sister in Athens while attending school. They were married on January 11, 1963.
One year later in January 1964, they welcomed their first child, Kelli. Later, their family was completed with their son, Kevin, born in 1969.
Morris and his family moved to Arab and Ft. Payne, AL, for a few years during the late 70s, where Morris worked as a Purchaser for Heil Co. The family returned to Athens in 1978 where Morris lived out his remaining years.
Morris loved his hometown of Athens and supported the town and local businesses any time he could. He was a graduate of Athens High School Class of 1959. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Athens College in 1970. He was a proud patriot and served his country in the U.S. National Guard.
Morris worked for several technology industries in Huntsville. Then, taking a job as an advanced procurement specialist for Chrysler in 1978, where he worked until he retired in 2006.
For nearly three decades Morris traveled extensively in the U.S. and overseas negotiating purchasing deals with the world’s top electronic suppliers for the automotive industry, spending a majority of that time in Asia and Europe. Wherever he traveled he carried literature to teach people the Gospel of Christ. He was a devoted Christian in all walks of life and wanted to reach as many people as he could. His career made him friends around the world and always spoke fondly of his time spent in other cultures.
Morris was an avid reader, well-versed on many subjects, studier of the Bible and author. He was a man of prayer and sincere devotion to God. He was a member of the Westview Church of Christ congregation in Athens. He loved the Lord, his family, and Alabama football. You didn’t have to know Morris too long to know these things about him.
When you walked into Morris’ home, you would find him sitting in his chair watching the news with a book in hand, or in his computer room, surrounded by his personal library, walls adorned with family pictures and football memorabilia and personal mementos from around the world.
Morris passed from this life on September 5, 2023, at his home.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Jean Bowers; son, Kevin Bowers of Odenville, AL; Five grandchildren, Amanda Gordon Abernathy (husband Philip) of Killen; Laura Gordon Stout of Phoenix, AZ; Matthew & Bradley Bowers of Odenville, AL; Amie Bowers of Centre, AL. Two great-grandchildren, Logan, and Jenna Abernathy. Brothers, Al Bowers of Birmingham and James Bowers of Elkmont (wife Rita); Brother-in-law, James Pack of Athens.
Morris was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother Clara Bowers; brother Billy Wayne Bowers; sister Jeanette Pack; brother Charles Bowers; sister-in-law Sue Bowers; daughter Kelli Gordon; and great-grandson Tyler Abernathy.
Morris did fight the good fight, finish the course, and kept the faith. In a letter, he says Goodbye until he sees us all again in Paradise.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of Limestone County.
A graveside service for Mr. Morris will be Friday, September 8th, 2023, at 12:00pm at Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 10:00-11:30am at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home.
