ATHENS-Master Sergeant Retired Jason Sanders, who served for 20 years in the United States Army Band, traveled nearly 12 hours from Washington D.C. to perform for our Dancercise Class today.
Jason was born and raised in Limestone County — graduating from Tanner High School.
“It’s just good to be back home,” Sanders said. “I’ve had a lot of support throughout my career from my family and friends here. To be able to give back a little bit really does mean the world to me.”
Over the course of his 20-year military career, Jason has had the honor of performing Taps nearly 7,000 times at Arlington Cemetery. He has also played in numerous nationally televised events for Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
Despite all of his accomplishments, Jason said he was still nervous to perform back home in front of his mother, Reita Sanders, who attends the Athens Activity Center.
“It’s really great to see her still be so active and social with everyone. There are so many great people here, and they all make the effort to get out and do something fun,” Sanders said.
Not only did Jason perform for the class, but he also talked to them about his role at Arlington Cemetery. He also tried his hand at some of the fun dance lessons as well.
