A celebration of the life of Mary Francis Blalock, age 101, of Decatur, will be held on her 102nd birthday, October 19, 2015, 3:00 p.m., at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tommy Lee officiating. Interment and graveside service will be held at a later date in Blacksburg, SC, where she grew up.

Miss Blalock died on October 16th at her home at Country Cottage on Old Moulton Road, Decatur, AL where she was lovingly cared for by a generous staff whom she came to know and love like family.

She graduated from Berea College in Kentucky. After enjoying a career in the U. S. Federal Court System in Kentucky, she retired and relocated to Alabama. Her work led to a lifelong interest in law and the court system. She held a deep and abiding love and concern for our country. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Blanche Jones Sunday School Class. Prayer was her special gift that she faithfully offered for friends, family members of friends, and friends of friends, many of whom she never knew. She enjoyed art and excelled as a portrait artist. She was loved by everyone and will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Miss Blalock was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers (all of whom served in WWII), and her lifelong family friend, Ruth Ann Mays. She is survived by one sister, Dorothy Curtis of Lilesville, NC; several nephews and nieces; special niece, Major Martha Will, USAF Retired, of Plano, TX; and neighbor, loving friend, and caregiver, Amanda Littrell Lowe of Decatur. In addition, she is survived by lifelong friends, John Edmond Mays of Decatur, and Ruth Van Pelt Mays Walden of Georgia, whom she loved like family.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley, or to the Blanche Jones Sunday School Class at First Presbyterian Church, Decatur.

My name is Ruth van Pelt Maulden, and Mary raised me and my father John Edmond Mays. She was my mother, not a friend. I will love you with all my heart and soul for the rest of my life. Thank you for being the mother I never had. Thank you for your unconditional love. You will never be forgotten.
